Your Breast Defense
Your best defense against breast cancer is regular and routine self breast exams. Know your breasts. Every ones breasts are different and unique get to know your own breasts. Know how your breasts look and how they feel. If you notice any change in the way your breasts look or feel, see your health care provider. Every woman should do monthly self breast exams. These can be done while in the shower or lying on your back. You may want to alternate methods as your breasts may feel differently with each position.
Also have your breast exam done by your health care provider, this is usually done when you have your routine pap test. Women should have a clinical breast exam at least every three years from the age of 20 to 39 and every year begining at 40.
Also women should have a mammogram, which is an x-ray study of the breasts every year starting at age 40. If you are younger but with a family history of breast cancer or other concerns talk with your health care provider about risk assessment and when to begin and how often. Mammograms can detect a lump before it can be felt.
This is such an important reminder. I am a breast cancer survivor so I know what I'm talking about.
